Plot summary

Anatoly Yefremovich Novoseltsev is a single father of two sons, clumsy but goodhearted, who works at a Moscow statistics bureau in 1976. The bureau answers to Ludmila Prokofievna Kalugina, an industrious single woman in her late thirties whom her staff call 'our frump'. Anatoly wants a promotion and a raise, but he is too timid to raise the subject. Olga Ryzhova, a married colleague and old classmate, urges him on. Another old friend, Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov, newly back in Moscow from Switzerland, nominates him to head the light industry department, and Kalugina turns the nomination down. Samokhvalov suggests he charm the boss instead. At a party in Samokhvalov's apartment Anatoly tries to flirt with her, and his awkward attempts repel her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Office Romance (1977)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Members of the State Art Council nominated the leading actors for the USSR State Prize, but Alisa Freindlich was the only lead not to receive it: rules barred a new prize within two years of a previous one, and she had been awarded for stage work a year before the film's release.
  • Oleg Basilashvili disliked playing the "villain" Samokhvalov and believed his own worn-out look suited the unkempt Novoseltsev better; he also had to travel between Moscow and Leningrad for stage work, and later admitted the director's choice was right.
  • Because Alisa Freindlich was tied to stage performances and rehearsals in Leningrad, Eldar Ryazanov promised her and her management she could return on first demand; she ended up traveling between Moscow and Leningrad all through the shoot.
  • Eldar Ryazanov created Kalugina with Alisa Freindlich in mind and began writing the screenplay only after every actor he wanted had agreed; he then cast them all without screen tests or Art Council approval, a rare case in Soviet cinema.
  • In 2004, DJ Groove from Saint Petersburg released remixes of the film's main themes that local radio stations broadcast frequently.
