Plot summary
An old man lives alone in a remote cabin, erratic and violent, calling for someone named Rascal and threatening to kill that person if they come back. A young hiker, Joe, knocks and says he has lost his way. The old man aims a shotgun at him and demands to know whether Joe knows where Rascal is or whether the old man's wife sent him. He lets Joe in but stays tense, the gun on him, and he takes a knife from Joe's belongings and keeps it. When Joe tries to run, the old man fires to stop him. The two trade stories: Joe's unhappy home life and a spell in the forest he cannot explain, and the old man's account of a Bible salesman who came to his home years ago.
