Plot summary

Dorine Douglas is a proofreader at Constant Consumer magazine, and budget cuts have turned her job into one she does from home. She lives with Carlotta, her mother, who is eccentric and infirm. When a co-worker, Gary Michaels, is electrocuted while she is helping him fix his computer, Dorine calls 911 and then hangs up. She rolls the body out to her car on a cart, drives it home and stores it in the basement. Keeping the dead man in the house quiets the loneliness of her days there, and the basement takes on the look of the office she has lost.
