Plot summary
Tim Russell leaves a psychiatric hospital convinced that nothing supernatural caused his parents' deaths. His sister Kaylie has spent years researching an antique mirror she blames for the family's ruin, and her job at an auction house gets her access to it. She has the mirror moved into their childhood home and sets up a room of surveillance cameras, plus an anchor rigged to fall and break the glass. Kaylie wants the mirror's power documented before she destroys it, proof that would clear her father Alan.

- Mike Flanagan turned down studio offers to shoot Oculus in the found footage style, and Intrepid Pictures agreed to produce the film only on the condition that he not use that format.
- Mike Flanagan wrote the character of Kaylie with Katee Sackhoff's performance in Battlestar Galactica in mind, then cast Karen Gillan based on her work on Doctor Who, while Sackhoff joined the film as the mother, Marie.
- In the mirror-auction scene, the auctioneer says the item was "recovered from the Levesque estate", a nod to WWE wrestler Triple H, whose real name is Paul Michael Levesque.
- Because the past and present timelines were hard to tell apart in early drafts of Oculus, the team's solution was to write every scene set in the past in italics.
