Plot summary
In 2010, at sixty, Diana Nyad decides to complete the one swim that has eluded her: a nonstop crossing from Cuba to Florida, more than 100 miles of open ocean. An earlier attempt, thirty years before, failed. She recruits Bonnie Stoll, her best friend and former partner, to train her, and the two move to Key West to prepare. She hires John Bartlett as navigator for the boat that will accompany her, and she chooses a Shark Shield, an electronic shark repellant, in place of a shark cage. Skeptics publicly doubt that a woman of her age can cover the distance.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about NYAD (2023)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Los Angeles Times reported that Diana Nyad had lied about her swimming record: she claimed sixth place at the 1968 Olympic trials, which she never attended, and her 2015 memoir Find a Way, the film's basis, claimed she was the first person to swim around Manhattan when she was the seventh.
- The film shows a shark encounter that never happened during Nyad's 2013 attempt, shows her completing an English Channel swim official records say she never did, and gives her a 7.5-hour Channel crossing, ten minutes faster than record holder Penny Lee Dean.
- Diana Nyad's crossing from Cuba to Florida took four attempts over four years and was never formally ratified because there were no independent observers and the records were incomplete; the Guinness Book of World Records revoked her achievement.
