Calls from his younger brother Fahmarr keep interrupting Ray McElrathbey's studying at Clemson University, where he is a freshman on a football scholarship for the Tigers. A weekend trip home shows him that their mother Tonya has relapsed, and that Fahmarr has been living with an acquaintance of the family. Facing the prospect of the boy entering the system, Ray takes Fahmarr back to campus, planning to keep him only until Tonya completes a month of recovery.
