Plot summary
In November 1988, Vinny Pazienza steps into the ring with Roger Mayweather for the WBC World Light Welterweight title, having ridden a stationary bicycle to make the weight limit. He makes 140 pounds, spends the night at a casino, and loses the next day. His manager, Lou Duva, tells the press Vinny should consider retiring, so Vinny fires him and hires Kevin Rooney as coach, while his father, Angelo, takes over as manager. Angelo lands him a title fight with Gilbert Dele, and Vinny wins it by technical knockout, becoming WBA World Light Middleweight champion. Told to defend the belt against Roberto Durán, Vinny drives out with his friend Jimmy and is hit head-on. In the hospital, a doctor says he may never walk again and offers surgery that would end his boxing career; Vinny picks the Halo brace instead.
