Plot summary
Adam Beckett dreams he is a pianist at Carnegie Hall until the audience discovers he has been using a player piano. He wakes on a train in Europe, where a Swedish architect hears his frustrated ambition to become an artist and encourages him. Adam returns to America to follow that dream and finds the Port Authority restricting entry into New York. He fails a drawing test and is given a menial job checking traffic before the Holland Tunnel. Unwilling to live under his aunt's and uncle's roof, he moves into a hotel room whose previous occupant vanished, leaving paintings behind. At work he meets Mara, another aspiring artist, and tags along as she shows him art forms around SoHo.
