Plot summary
In August and September 2001, an expedition returns to the site of the 1912 Titanic wreck, where nearly 1,500 people died. The team of marine and history experts works from the Russian research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, and the submersibles Mir 1 and Mir 2 carry them down on twelve dives to film the ship's interiors and exteriors. Two small remotely operated vehicles, built for the trip, offer glimpses into the wreck, and imagery superimposes the Titanic's original appearance over the deep-dive views. Cameras made for the expedition record the wreck in 3D. On September 11, 2001, during a dive, the crew hears of the attacks in the United States and compares that disaster with the one they have come to study.

- James Cameron took scientists down to the Titanic in Russian deep submersibles across August and September 2001, using two small remotely operated vehicles built for the job to get sharper images of the wreck than anyone had managed before.
- Cameron wanted Toad the Wet Sprocket's 1991 "Nightingale Song" but balked at Columbia Records asking over $5,000 for one minute. Finding the band had split in 1998, he asked singer Glen Phillips to write something new, and Phillips produced the opening track "Departure".
