Plot summary
Douglas Damiano is in his late teens in the New Jersey suburbs in the 1960s, living with his father Pat, his mother Antoinette, and his sister Evelyn. After he watches his friend Eugene Gaunt sing and play lead guitar in a high school band, Douglas decides to join it so he can win over Grace Dietz. He gets the chance when Schindewulf, the drummer, is drafted to Vietnam. Eugene is reshaping the group in the style of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and the core becomes Douglas on drums and backup vocals, Eugene, and their friend Wells on rhythm guitar. Douglas tells Pat he intends to enlist and get an ROTC scholarship, but once the war in Vietnam starts he sets that aside. He leaves college to play music full time, which opens a rift with Pat.
