Plot summary
Nickie Reichert, sixteen, was the passenger in a stolen car when it crashed, and two years on the people around that night are still caught in it. His mother Catherine will not let anyone touch his belongings and has turned away from her husband Dale and their younger son Brady, who grows up in his brother's shadow. Walter Braugher, the professor who was driving the other car and was found not criminally negligent, drinks and cannot reach his wife Abby, finding company instead with his student Sherri Banks. His autistic brother Dennis, also in the car, has not left his apartment since. Jordie, who drove the stolen car, has just come out of the Youth Detention Centre, sullen, while his father Carl, a psychotherapist, has not forgiven him, which strains Carl's marriage to Jordie's stepmother Elise.
