Edric Connor
Biography
Edric Connor was a singer, folklorist and actor from the Caribbean who moved to Britain in 1944 and made his BBC Radio debut two weeks later on Calling the West Indies. Born in Mayaro, Trinidad, he studied engineering at the Victoria Institute in Port of Spain and also studied Caribbean folk singing on his own. He brought the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra to the 1951 Festival of Britain, and in 1955 he recorded the Manchester United Calypso, the football club's first song. On stage he appeared in Summer Song in London in 1956, and in 1958 he played Gower in Pericles, becoming the Royal Shakespeare Company's first black actor. His 18 films included Moby Dick (1956), as Daggoo, and Fire Down Below (1957), as Jimmy Jean. On television he played Thompson in Danger Man, and he directed a Caribbean Carnival event in London in 1959 and helped establish the Negro Theatre Workshop.

In 1958, Connor performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, the first black actor to do so. Paul Robeson recommended him for the part of Gower in Pericles.

In 1955, Connor recorded the "Manchester United Calypso", which was the first song for the Manchester United Football Club. Eric Watterson and Ken Jones wrote it.

Connor settled in Britain in 1944, and two weeks later he made his first appearance on BBC Radio. He was heard in Calling the West Indies, a show made for Caribbean listeners.
Behind the camera
Connor directed a "Caribbean Carnival" at St Pancras Town Hall in London at the end of January 1959. Fellow Trinidadian Claudia Jones organized it, and the BBC televised the event.
