Lilli Palmer

German-born actress and writer Lilli Palmer began in British films in the 1930s and later moved into Hollywood. After performing at the Moulin Rouge in France, she went to London, where Gaumont signed her and she debuted in Crime Unlimited (1935). With Warner Brothers she appeared in Cloak and Dagger (1946) and Body and Soul (1947), and she earned a Golden Globe nomination for But Not for Me (1959). Palmer won the Volpi Cup for The Four Poster (1952) and the Deutscher Filmpreis three times. Her later roles included The Pleasure of His Company (1961), The Counterfeit Traitor (1962), and The House That Screamed (1969). She also starred in the television miniseries Peter the Great (1986), which brought another Golden Globe nomination, and published the memoir Change Lobsters and Dance (1975) and the novel The Red Raven (1978).
