Barbara Baxley
Biography
Barbara Baxley was an American actress and singer who built her career on the New York stage before moving into film and television. Born in Porterville, California, she acted for six years in school and Little Theater productions before turning professional, and she studied with Sanford Meisner in New York City at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. She was a life member of the Actors Studio and was nominated for a Tony Award in 1961 for her performance in Tennessee Williams's Broadway comedy Period of Adjustment. She also appeared on Broadway in The Three Sisters, Plaza Suite, She Loves Me and Best Friend. She made her film debut in East of Eden and had the lead in The Savage Eye (1960). She was known for playing Lady Pearl in Robert Altman's Nashville (1975) and Sally Field's mother in Norma Rae (1979), and she worked widely in television.
