Did you know?!Facts and trivia about No Country for Old Men (2007)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To date it is the last Western film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, the others being Cimarron in 1931, Dances With Wolves in 1990 and Unforgiven in 1992.
- The role of Llewelyn Moss was originally offered to Heath Ledger, but he turned it down to spend time with his newborn daughter. Garret Dillahunt auditioned five times for the same role and was instead offered the part of Wendell, Ed Tom Bell's deputy.
- Josh Brolin was not the Coens' first choice, so he enlisted the help of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez to make an audition reel during the production of Grindhouse. His agent eventually secured a meeting with the Coens and he was given the part.
- Javier Bardem nearly withdrew from the role of Anton Chigurh over scheduling issues, and English actor Mark Strong was put on standby to take over, but the problems were resolved and Bardem took on the role.
- Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood was being shot in Marfa simultaneously, and the Coen brothers were forced to scrap an entire day of filming when preparations for its oil derrick scene nearby produced enough smoke to ruin all potential scenes.
- Carter Burwell found that most musical instruments did not fit the minimalist sound sculpture he had in mind, so he used singing bowls, the standing metal bells of Buddhist meditation that produce a sustained tone when rubbed. The movie contains a mere 16 minutes of music.
- Roger Deakins said everything was storyboarded before shooting and there are maybe only a dozen shots that are not in the final film. They shot only 250,000 feet, where most productions of that size might shoot 700,000 or a million feet of film.
- Tommy Lee Jones sued Paramount in 2008 over bonuses and improper expense deductions. The matter was resolved in April 2010, the company paying him a $17.5 million box office bonus after a determination that his deal had been misdrafted by studio attorneys, who then settled with Paramount for $2.6 million over the error.
