Plot summary
The space fortress SDF-1 Macross shelters an entire city of civilians, cut off from Earth and hunted by the giant Zentradi as it makes the long journey home. Hikaru Ichijyo, a young pilot, and Lynn Minmay, a pop idol, meet during a Zentradi assault and are trapped for days inside one section of the fortress; after their rescue they grow close. The Zentradi, an all-male race of giants, find that human music disrupts them, and their supreme leader suspects a connection between human culture and an ancient music box he has kept for ages. When Hikaru takes Minmay on a joyride in a fighter trainer across Saturn's rings, Zentradi forces seize them as well as Lieutenant Misa Hayase and Hikaru's superior, Roy Föcker.

For its 1986 US television release as Clash of the Bionoids, prepared by Peregrine Film Distribution, the ending was changed: the scene of Hikaru calling the Macross after Boddole Zer's explosion was cut, giving the false impression that he died in the blast.- Near the end of the film, as Hikaru fires a barrage of missiles towards Boddole Zer, two of the missiles were drawn as an animators' inside joke to look like cans of Budweiser and Tako Hai, a drink whose name translates as "Octopus Highball".
- Production issues forced an ending sequence showing Minmay in concert to be cut from the 1984 theatrical release; it was later animated for the 1987 OVA Flash Back 2012 and folded back into the film's end credits in a version marketed as the Complete Edition.
- In this film the Zentradi speak a fictional extraterrestrial language created for the movie, with subtitles for the audience, much like Klingon in Star Trek; that language went on to be used in later Macross works.
- Made on a budget of ¥400 million, the film was the second most expensive anime film up until then, after Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979).
- Even though Big West, Studio Nue and Harmony Gold agreed in 2021 to release various Macross sequels outside Japan, the official Robotech account on Twitter said in 2023 that Do You Remember Love? remains prohibited.
- This film's SDF-1 carries two ARMD carriers as its 'arms' instead of the TV series' docked Daedalus and Prometheus, and that design became the Macross seen in later installments such as Macross II, Macross Plus and Macross Frontier.
