Plot summary
Agnes-Marie Pottie, known as Mooney, is fifteen and out of step with her family in the remote coastal town of New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Cecil Sweeney, her English teacher, thinks she is an exceptional student and urges her to study at an arts school in New York City. She wins a scholarship to one, but her devout parents, Francis and Cookie, will not allow it. The family that arrives in the house beside theirs includes Lou Benzoa, a small girl from New York whose father is a jailed boxer. Lou can knock a man off his feet when he is lying, which the town's Catholic residents take for a miracle, and girlfriends pay her to do it to men who cheat on them. Mooney brings Lou in as muscle for a plan of her own.
