Plot summary
Death, the opening half, gathers scenes from the first twenty-four episodes of the Evangelion television series into a clip show and adds animation drawn after the broadcast: shots redrawn as they first appeared, new shots fitted into existing sequences, and linking passages in which the four central characters perform Pachelbel's Canon in a string quartet arrangement. The second half, Rebirth, is new animation made as a preview of the reworked ending while that ending was still in production. It begins with preparations for the Human Instrumentality Project and the JSSDF's assault on the Geofront, which leaves NERV headquarters thinly defended while Misato Katsuragi and her colleagues try to reach Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Evangelion:Rebirth is around 24 minutes of entirely new animation that became the first third of The End of Evangelion, released four months later. It was put out as a preview while End was still being made, so its editing, redrawn shots and soundtrack cues differ from the finished film.
- Evangelion:Death is a clip show of the first 24 TV episodes with animation made after the original broadcast, including linking segments of the four main characters playing Pachelbel's Canon as a string quartet. Some of that new animation was later re-edited into extended 'Home Video Versions' of episodes 21-24.
