Plot summary
On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 carries the Old Christians rugby team of Stella Maris College toward a match in Chile, along with relatives and friends. Clouds and turbulence give way to a collision with a mountain; the wings and tail break off and the fuselage slides to a stop on a slope. The impact throws six passengers and a flight attendant out to their deaths. Antonio, the team captain, takes charge of the rescue effort, and two medical students, Roberto Canessa and Gustavo Zerbino, treat the wounded, among them Nando, who has a head injury, and his sister Susana. At nightfall the group seals the open end of the fuselage with luggage and huddles together for warmth.
