Plot summary
At St. Bernadette's primary school, the children want to enter A Song for Christmas, a contest in which every school writes its own carol and the winner collects ten thousand pounds and a shot at the Christmas number one. Mrs. Bevan, the headteacher, will not let the class take part without a qualified teacher, and she expects that the childlike teaching assistant Mr. Desmond Poppy, her nephew, will drive any teacher away. Donald Peterson is the anxious newcomer, newly moved with his pregnant wife Sarah, and he measures himself against a father who dominates him and a twin brother, Roderick, a composer and conductor. Mr. Poppy persuades Donald to sign the entry forms, then carries him and the class off toward Castell Llawen in Wales, where the competition is held.
