Plot summary
A second-class cyclist on a Spanish team, Pepe Benengeli rides as a domestique, a backup rider whose place is to help the team's star rather than to win for himself. This summer the Vuelta a España, his country's road race, comes through the streets of his hometown in Andalusia, and the penultimate stage falls on the day his elder brother Ángel marries Carmen, the woman Pepe once dated. He left that hometown after a breakdown. The team's sponsors expect him to ride for its leader, and Pepe, on the roads he grew up on, wants the day to bring him something of his own.

- Nasu: Summer in Andalusia became the first Japanese anime film ever selected for the Cannes Film Festival, premiering in the Directors' Fortnight section on May 18, 2003.
- Director Kitarō Kōsaka only took on the adaptation after his long-time collaborator Hayao Miyazaki, himself a fan of cycling, recommended Iou Kuroda's manga to him.
- The film's rival cycling teams are modelled on real ones: Zamenhoff's team Pamei is named after Mapei, while Bazel's team P-Phone and its sprint train tactics echo Telekom, whose sprinter Erik Zabel Bazel is named after.
