Plot summary
A filmmaker narrator resolves to escape Winnipeg by making a film about it. He describes the city where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, a spot called the Forks, and a supposed underground river system beneath it. Winnipeg, he says, has ten times the usual rate of sleepwalking, and residents carry keys to former homes. He also recalls a railway treasure hunt whose prize is a one-way ticket out of town. To free himself, he rents his childhood house at 800 Ellice Avenue and hires actors to portray his family, including Mother, who stars in a television drama called LedgeMan, in which a man climbs onto a window ledge and Mother talks him down.

- Guy Maddin's producer told him "Don't give me the frozen hellhole everyone knows that Winnipeg is", so Maddin cast Darcy Fehr as the on-screen "Guy Maddin" and built the film around a metafictional plot that mythologizes Winnipeg and Maddin's own autobiography.
