Plot summary
After the summer, Marcel Pagnol returns with his family to Marseille, and he misses the countryside. At Christmas they travel back to their cottage, a trip that takes public transport part of the way and then a long walk along a winding road. While gathering thyme for his mother, Marcel meets Isabelle, a girl who lives nearby, and they arrange to play at her house. On a later journey the family runs into Bouzigue, once a pupil of Marcel's father, who now works on the canal that carries water from the hills into Marseille. The canal crosses private estates, and Bouzigue holds a key to its locked doors. He offers the family his spare key and shows them how much of the walk it would save. Marcel's father, an upright man, sees the route as trespassing and hesitates.
