Plot summary
Pierre Brochant is a Parisian publisher and a tax cheat, and Wednesday is the night of the idiots' dinner he and his friends hold. Each guest brings an oblivious man obsessed with some ridiculous pastime so the others can mock him all evening, and the most spectacular fool is crowned champion. An idiot scout leads him to François Pignon, a Finance Ministry employee who builds famous landmarks out of matchsticks, and Brochant invites him over before the dinner. Then Brochant's back goes out on the golf course at his country club, and his wife Christine walks out, tired of the cruelty of the game. When Pignon arrives, Brochant wants him gone, then finds he depends on him.
