Plot summary

Godefroy de Montmirail, a count in 1123, saves King Louis VI from enemy troops and is rewarded with marriage to his beloved Frénégonde. Riding home for the wedding, he and his men take a witch prisoner in the forest; she slips a potion into his gourd, and the drink makes him hallucinate and fire his crossbow, striking his bride's father. His wedding lost, Godefroy turns to the mage Eusæbius, whose potion is meant to return him to the moment before the accident. Jacquouille la Fripouille, his squire, tastes it first, then Godefroy drinks, and the two are thrown centuries forward. They wake in a wood they do not know, where Jacquouille finds an asphalt road, a car and a postman.
