Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Grace is questioned by police after a drowning at the reservoir, and she says nothing about the other girl she glimpsed at the water. She traces the girl to an isolated property, where Claudia lives on her own; Claudia's mother is the woman who drowned, the reclusive writer Veronica Fox. A dog named Tilly is with her on the property. Grace keeps coming back, bringing things from outside such as candy and strawberry milk, and the two become friends. Grace returns home between her visits, where she lives with her mother and an argumentative stepfather, and she is unhappy there.
