Plot summary
Kazu Gamble is newly sober and out of work when her grandmother Millie dies, leaving her as guardian of Kazu's teenage half-sister Music, the girl Millie raised. Music is nonverbal and autistic, and her days followed a routine Millie had set. A meltdown over a braid brings their neighbor Ebo to the door; he calms Music, and he and Zu become friends. Ebo is a boxer who teaches the sport to children, among them Felix, who lives opposite Music. With his help Zu learns how to care for her sister, while she keeps dealing drugs with her friend Rudy to fund a move to Costa Rica.

- The role of Zu was originally written as male, to be played by Shia LaBeouf and then Jonah Hill. Sia changed the character's sex and cast Kate Hudson after seeing an Instagram post of her singing.
- Sia apologized on Twitter on February 4, 2021, after criticism from autistic people, and said future screenings would carry a warning and have the physical restraint scenes removed. The film was released anyway, not recut and without a warning.
- The Autistic Self Advocacy Network, the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint and CommunicationFIRST jointly called for Sia to cancel the film over its restraint scenes. A Change.org petition by Danish advocate Nina Skov Jensen to rescind its Golden Globe nominations passed 140,000 signatures.
- Music was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress (Kate Hudson) at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, but also drew four Golden Raspberry nominations, winning Worst Actress for Hudson, Worst Supporting Actress for Maddie Ziegler and Worst Director for Sia.
- Sia's film was first conceived as a non-musical; turning it into a musical raised the budget from $4 million to $16 million.
- The editing process took three years. Sia told Rolling Stone Australia that making the film was fun but editing "actually made me sick" and left her with an illness and severe pain, and that she struggled to find the right editor.
- Sia wrote 10 original songs for Music, with the performances shared by Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr. and Maddie Ziegler. A full cast soundtrack album was expected through Atlantic but was never released.
