Plot summary
County Durham, 1984, and the coal miners' strike is just starting. Eleven-year-old Billy Elliot has no mother. Kept behind after his boxing lesson, he strays into a ballet class taught by Mrs Wilkinson and stays to watch. The dancing draws him in, though he is the only boy present. At home, only his grandmother is around, and she speaks of the violence she suffered from her late husband and of her own love of dancing. His father Jackie, his brother Tony and their neighbors walk the picket line and clash with riot police. Billy goes on attending the lessons and tells his family nothing about them.
