Plot summary
Audrey has wanted to see Europe since her wedding, when her husband Nick, an NYPD officer, promised to take her there, and she doubts the trip will ever happen. After their fifteenth-anniversary dinner she confronts him, and he tells her he has already booked the journey. On the flight they meet Charles Cavendish, a wealthy man who invites them to a party aboard his family's yacht, where his uncle Malcolm Quince is to marry Cavendish's former fiancée. Grace Ballard, an actress, is among the guests, as are the Maharajah Vikram, race car driver Juan Carlos, Colonel Ulenga and the Colonel's bodyguard Sergei. Quince announces that his bride alone will inherit, cutting off the rest. The lights go out before he signs the new will, and when they return he is found stabbed.

- Charlize Theron signed on to star in Murder Mystery in June 2012, with John Madden directing from James Vanderbilt's screenplay; before that announcement, the project had been set up at Walt Disney Studios with Kevin McDonald set to direct.
- In April 2013, Colin Firth, Adam Sandler and Emily Blunt were reported to have joined Murder Mystery, although representatives for Firth and Blunt denied that they were boarding the film.
- Netflix reported that 30.9 million households watched Murder Mystery in its first 72 hours, calling it the biggest opening weekend for a film in the company's history.
- Filming in Italy took in Santa Margherita Ligure, Lake Como and Milan, where most of the scenes set in Monaco were actually shot, using Carabinieri vehicles and uniforms.
