Plot summary
Police learn of a dead body at a large English estate, and detective Felix Detweiler goes there to investigate. The owner, Mister Frost, has no other name anyone can find, and he admits that a number of bodies lie buried on the grounds. He is arrested and placed in a psychiatric hospital in France, where the authorities cannot establish who he is. Detweiler gives up his job and cannot let go of Frost or the twenty-four corpses found on the grounds. Dr. Sarah Day is one of the doctors at the hospital. Frost says nothing for two years, then speaks only to her. Those who watch him there come to see that Frost is not a man they can account for.
