Plot summary
John Miller is a Vietnam War veteran who works in a Detroit factory. In 1977 he finishes a term of probation. He buys an engagement ring for his girlfriend Sophia, whom he rescued from Reynolds, a drug trafficker and her abusive ex-boyfriend. Reynolds is jealous. He pays the corrupt detective Savick to plant drugs in John's car. Sophia agrees to marry John, and John is arrested.

- After the Warner Bros. incarnation of Motor City was canceled, Gerard Butler sued financiers Randall Emmett and George Furla for $5.1 million in damages, claiming a pay-or-play deal that guaranteed him $4 million even if the film was never made.
- Dominic Cooper entered negotiations for the lead after producer Joel Silver was impressed by his dual role in The Devil's Double, but Cooper left over scheduling conflicts and Jake Gyllenhaal was in talks to replace him alongside Amber Heard and Gary Oldman.
- When Jake Gyllenhaal hit the same scheduling conflicts, the producers opened negotiations with Gerard Butler for the lead, and by August 2012 Adrien Brody had joined to play the villain after Gary Oldman dropped out.
