Plot summary
Alice and her next-door neighbor Céline, both mothers of young boys in a 1960 American suburb, are close friends. Alice arranges a birthday celebration for Céline. The morning after, Max, Céline's son, is kept home from school because he is sick. From her rose garden, Alice spots him up on a balcony, putting up a birdhouse from school. She hurries to reach him, first trying to slip through a narrow break in the hedge between the two yards, where her broad sunhat holds her up, then running around to the front door. Céline, inside vacuuming, cannot hear her in time. Max does not survive the fall. After the funeral, Céline grows distant from Alice and turns her attention to Alice's son, Theo.
