Plot summary
Mother is the wife and muse of Him, a celebrated poet who is blocked and unable to work. They live in a country house that she is renovating, and at times she pictures a beating heart inside it. One afternoon a stranger asks for a room, saying he is an orthopedic surgeon and calling himself Man. That night Mother sees him wracked by dry heaves and notices an injury on his side. Woman, his wife, arrives the following day, and Mother grows annoyed with both guests. Him appeals to her to let the couple stay, telling her that Man is a fan.

- Jóhann Jóhannsson wrote a 90-minute score for mother!, but after hearing it against a rough cut, he and Darren Aronofsky agreed to drop it; they tried a minimal version with sound design by Craig Henighan before deciding the film worked best with no music at all.
- Darren Aronofsky wrote the screenplay for mother! in five days, much faster than his usual pace, after the idea came to him while he was working on a children's film following 2014's Noah.
