Plot summary
A woman wanders the ruins of a city that was destroyed and emptied in a catastrophe. She does not remember her name, where she is supposed to be going, or whether she ever had relatives, and the people she meets cannot help her. Memories arrive as dreams. The buildings stand open, their windows and doors left that way, and a film theater is the only place where sound breaks the quiet. The quiet is misleading, because the city comes alive at times and turns dangerous, where carelessness and trust can cost a life. She crosses the city looking for a way into the zone that is forbidden to her. A man employed as a guard, alone and in despair, is the one she meets there.
