Plot summary

The salvage freighter Corona answers a distress signal and comes upon a graveyard of ships orbiting a giant station. Engineers Heintz and Miguel go aboard and find opulent European rooms in decay, with no one alive, then split up to trace the signal's source. In the second of the three stories, lab technician Nobuo Tanaka, down with the flu, swallows experimental pills meant for soldiers, and his body begins producing a toxic gas that spreads for miles as he travels toward Tokyo, unaware of what he leaves behind. The third follows a boy in a walled city at war, where nearly every building mounts a cannon; his father loads one of the largest guns, and his mother works in a munitions plant.

Katsuhiro Otomo first asked Yoshiaki Kawajiri to direct Stink Bomb, but Kawajiri turned the job down because the script differed from his own style; he still did storyboard revisions as a supervisor and animated keys on the tunnel scene.
Cannon Fodder is animated as one uninterrupted continuous shot; animation film director Sunao Katabuchi was specially invited to work out the techniques that create the illusion.
