Plot summary
A rider brings two men an object that came down from the sky. They live in a technologically advanced society that keeps a primitive population beside it, and they recognize the object as a transmission module sent decades earlier, holding the video diary of a space expedition. The diary follows five dissidents, O'Tamor, Tomasz, Marta, Piotr and Jerzy, who have turned their backs on their own people to build a new civilization. Their craft goes down in the mountains of a planet much like Earth, and a second craft, carrying the Remogner brothers, goes down nearby. The thin air at that height leaves the survivors unable to breathe, so they set out for the coast, passing vast ruins that point to an earlier civilization.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about On the Silver Globe (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Janusz Wilhelmi, Poland's vice-minister of cultural affairs, shut down the film when it was eighty percent complete and ordered all its materials destroyed; the studio and members of the cast and crew preserved the reels, costumes and props. The footage was later used to finish the film.
- Andrzej Żuławski had left Poland for France in 1972 to avoid Polish government censorship, but after the 1975 success of L'important c'est d'aimer the cultural authorities invited him back to make a film of his choice, and he chose his grand-uncle Jerzy Żuławski's novel.
- When Żuławski agreed in late 1985 to finish the abandoned film, he shot footage of the streets of contemporary Poland and added voice-over narration to describe the missing scenes, and the cast members abroad were dubbed.
