Plot summary
In 1991, Maks and Albert Starski enter a hibernation experiment designed by Professor Wiktor Kuppelweiser, expecting to be awakened three years later. A nuclear war intervenes, and they wake in 2044 in an underground society of women governed by the Women's League. They take it at first for a clinic where women care for them. Maks is drawn to Lamia Reno. The men are told that Kuppelweiser does not exist, that the war was long ago and that males are extinct. They remain under constant surveillance while the authorities decide their fate. Lamia explains that in her world women reproduce without males, by parthenogenesis.
