Plot summary
On Gandahar, poverty is unknown and the inhabitants live in harmony with the natural world. That peace breaks when automata known as the Men of Metal march through outlying villages, turning the people to stone and taking the statues with them. At the capital, Jasper, the Council of Women gives Sylvain the task of finding out what the attackers are and where they come from. On his journey he meets the Deformed, mutant beings created by Gandahar's own scientists in a genetic experiment; the Men of Metal threaten them as well, and they offer Sylvain their help. He also saves Airelle, a Gandaharian woman, who travels with him.

- The English-language version of Gandahar cut a late scene in which Airelle and Sylvain are in the nest, for sexual content; in the uncut version the pair are shown lying nude in the nest at night.
- The English-language version of Gandahar does not contain most of Yared's soundtrack for the original film; new music by Jack Maeby, Bob Jewitt and Jim Klein was produced for certain sequences.
