Plot summary
In a port city, children have been abducted by the Cyclops, a cyborg cult that trades them to Krank, a being who cannot dream and ages prematurely. Krank keeps a dream-extracting machine on an abandoned oil rig and supplies the Cyclops with mechanical eyes and ears in return. Among the kidnapped is Denrée, the strongman One's adopted little brother. After the carnival manager is stabbed, One takes work with a gang of orphans led by conjoined twins called the Octopus, and one of their number, a girl named Miette, joins him. When One glimpses Denrée's kidnappers, he and Miette follow the Cyclops toward their headquarters.
