Plot summary
After a storm, the fishing vessel Yahata Maru is found adrift with a single survivor, Hiroshi Okumura, who tells reporter Goro Maki that a monster attacked the boat. Prime Minister Seiki Mitamura learns that Godzilla has returned and orders the news kept from the public; the government takes Hiroshi into custody, and Maki's article is spiked. Sent instead to interview bio-physicist Makoto Hayashida, Maki meets Naoko, Hiroshi's sister, and tells her against orders that her brother is alive. When Godzilla sinks a Soviet submarine, Moscow blames Washington, and Japan must admit what it knows to keep the standoff from becoming war.

- Raymond Burr, reprising his Godzilla, King of the Monsters! role of Steve Martin, shot his new scenes for Godzilla 1985 in one day of a three-day shoot, worked no more than eight hours and refused to memorize lines, so teleprompters were placed around the set.
- The BBFC removed the sea louse attack from the UK theatrical release of Godzilla 1985 after its examiner report said the uncut scene would "simply frighten kids under the seats, never to re-emerge"; the film got a PG only after the cut, and UK VHS copies put the scene back.
- New World Pictures first planned to have Lorne Greene star in the new American scenes of Godzilla 1985, but producer Tony Randel pushed for Raymond Burr as an homage to Burr's starring role in Godzilla, King of the Monsters!.
- Warren Kemmerling refused to perform comic material in the new footage of Godzilla 1985 — not out of respect for Godzilla — so the script was revamped to reassign all the comedic lines to Travis Swords.
- Dr Pepper launched a US$10 million advertising campaign for Godzilla 1985, and its soda is prominently featured in the new footage, including a vending machine at The Pentagon.
- The Pentagon war room in Godzilla 1985's new footage was a large montage of the war room from The Philadelphia Experiment, another film from the same studio.
- Godzilla 1985 kept Reijiro Koroku's score from The Return of Godzilla but also integrated portions of Christopher Young's score for the 1985 Canadian film Def-Con 4.
- Godzilla 1985 was the last Godzilla film produced by Toho to receive any major North American theatrical release until Godzilla 2000, fifteen years later.
