Monsieur Hire (1989) on Netflix

Plot summary

Hire lives alone and works as a tailor, speaking to almost no one. Away from his job he keeps to himself, apart from the odd visit to a brothel, a skating rink or a bowling alley, and he claims to dislike people even though he studies them closely. Alice has moved in across the way and leaves her blinds open at night, and he watches her from his darkened apartment. One night a young woman is found dead nearby, and the inspector handling the case begins to press Hire, hoping to trap him into a confession. A flash of lightning shows Alice his face at the window, and she sees that he has been watching her.
