Plot summary
Jake Neeley has spent 35 years by himself in a cabin in the Pacific Northwest woods, carrying guilt over the soldiers who died under his command in Vietnam. His only contact with other people comes on trips into town, where he sells firewood and buys supplies from Kate, a widowed storekeeper. Then Henry R. Hocknell, who served in his platoon, arrives at the cabin. He is dying of lung cancer from his exposure to Agent Orange, and he wants Jake to raise Lenny, his half-Vietnamese daughter. Jake turns him down. Henry disappears during the night and leaves the girl behind, and Jake has little choice but to take her in. Lenny is difficult and overturns the routine he has kept for decades.
