Plot summary
The Miss Juneteenth crown went to Turquoise Jones years ago; the prize was a scholarship to a historically Black college. Kai's birth cut her own college years short. Now she raises fifteen-year-old Kai in a Fort Worth suburb, working at a bar and, part time, doing hair at a mortuary whose owner is romantically interested in her. She is still in love with Ronnie, Kai's father, and the two keep sleeping together though they are officially separated. Turquoise enters Kai in the pageant, hoping the girl avoids repeating her mistakes. Kai, who wants to dance, shows little enthusiasm for the contest.
