Plot summary
Lieutenant Commander Edwin T. Layton serves as an American naval attaché in Japan, and in December 1937 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto warns him that American threats to Japan's oil would force the country into war. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the United States enters World War II. Yamamoto and Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi propose a follow-up invasion of Midway Island, but the Japanese Army turns it down. In February, Lieutenant Richard "Dick" Best, a naval aviator, joins raids from a carrier against the Marshall Islands.

- When no major studio would bankroll Midway, Roland Emmerich cut down the battle sequences and turned to individuals for money, raising $76 million, then added $24 million in equity, mostly from Chinese investors, to reach the $100 million budget that made it one of the costliest independent films ever made.
- One "Hollywood-ized" scene happened as shown: Bruno Gaido sprinting into a parked plane to shoot down a crippled plane attempting to crash into the Enterprise, then being promoted on the spot. In reality, according to USA Today, Gaido hid afterwards, afraid he would get in trouble for leaving his battle station, and had to be hunted down and brought to Halsey.
- Roland Emmerich had tried to make Midway at Sony Pictures back in the 1990s, when William Goldman became interested in the project, but executives balked at the proposed $100 million budget ($152 million in 2019 dollars) and he moved on to direct The Patriot instead.
