Plot summary
In May 1864, Union forces move into the Shenandoah Valley, and the boys of the Virginia Military Institute are called to its defense. The teenage cadets have been sheltered from the war until then, and they must confront an adult world and its horrors. The story comes from a true account of VMI cadets, and the characters include John Wise, Sam Atwill and Jack Stanard.

- The film is based on the true story of Virginia Military Institute cadets who fought at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864; ten cadets died there. Its title comes from the many soldiers' boots left on the muddy battlefield.
