Plot summary
In 2006 the U.S. Army sets up outposts across northern Afghanistan to make contact with local people and to cut the flow of weapons and Taliban fighters coming from Pakistan. One of them, PRT Kamdesh, later renamed Combat Outpost Keating, stands in a valley enclosed by the Hindu Kush mountains, and one analyst says it might as well be called Camp Custer. Fifty-three American soldiers and two Latvian military advisors hold the base. Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha reaches it with a group of new soldiers under Captain Benjamin D. Keating. The men beat back Taliban attacks, and Keating calls a shura where he offers village elders money for building projects if they will keep the peace. A test finds gunshot residue on a local man from an earlier attack, yet he and other villagers lay down their weapons.

- Because Clint Romesha had written his own book on the same battle, which Sony Pictures had optioned, the producers of The Outpost rushed to get their film made first, and a legal letter from that studio limited contact between Romesha and Scott Eastwood, who plays him.
- Three weeks before filming was set to begin, Scott Eastwood broke his ankle, causing a two-week delay and forcing rewrites and the re-choreographing of the fight sequences.
- The real base sat in a remote Hindu Kush valley and was regarded as a deathtrap; the battle there pitted 53 U.S. soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division and two Latvian military advisors against some 300 insurgents.
