Plot summary
John Rollins works a corn farm that crows and a broken irrigation system are stripping bare, and the bank is close to closing on his mortgage. He cannot get credit for a new water pump or for seed, and his wife Mary has been giving her attention to her friend Tommy, which strains the marriage. A secret door in the barn leads John to a strange scarecrow, and his son Michael asks him to destroy it. Jude Weatherby, their neighbor, turns up with a six-pack of beer and talks John, a man who does not drink, into standing the scarecrow in the cornfield.
