Plot summary
A documentary about the making of Alien. It works through material from the production, including the original story notes, rejected designs and the storyboards, along with behind-the-scenes footage and a 29-page script that Dan O'Bannon wrote in 1971 under the title Memory. From there it follows the ideas that fed the project, among them underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon, Greek and Egyptian myth, H. P. Lovecraft and the dark visions of H.R. Giger and Dan O'Bannon. The documentary treats cinema as a collective art form shaped by writers, performers and technicians as much as by a director, and places the film's roots in myth and the collective unconscious.
