Plot summary
Friz and MEAD, the starship he is joined to in a symbiotic link, are fugitives in a distant future. Bounty hunters chase them. MEAD projects Friz's thoughts as illusions, and the hunters are fooled into wrecking their own ship. A person in a spacesuit drifts in the debris, and the pair take the unconscious wearer aboard. She is Phoebe, an inmate who had broken out of prison and was caught again by the hunters. She wakes knowing who they are and that every planet in the Solar System wants them. She keeps her distance at first.
