Plot summary
In Paris during the German invasion of France, Jewish refugee S. L. Jacobowsky tries to get out before the country falls. Polish diplomat Dr. Szicki hands Colonel Prokoszny secret information that must reach London by a certain date. Jacobowsky acquires an automobile through the chauffeur of the absent Baron Rothschild, and Prokoszny requisitions it but has to accept the passenger, since Jacobowsky has secured gasoline. The two men, who come from the same Polish village, set off with the colonel's orderly, Szabuniewicz. Prokoszny drives toward Reims, in the path of the German army, to collect his girlfriend, Suzanne Roualet, an innkeeper's daughter who has drawn the admiration of German Major von Bergen.
